Alexis Torres Marroquín is a Salvadoran-American artist, designer, and educator based in Richmond, Virginia. Their multidisciplinary practice uses sensuality as a methodological framework to explore ways of addressing feminine expunction, heteronormative violence, and repressed sexual expression within the built environment. With a deep geographical and cultural connection to Central America and the American North East, Alexis uses soft and plushy fabric materials as their personal liberatory gesture to elicit intimate notions of carnality. Alexis’ mediums include soft sculpture, fiber art, installation, and mixed-media collage.
Alexis has won regional awards such as the Visual Arts Fellowship at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Their work has been featured in publications such as Suboart Magazine and The Bureau of Queer Art. Alexis holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University and is currently pursuing their Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture and Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University. Alexis is a former educator at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York, and is currently assistant teaching in the Art Foundations department at VCU Arts.
